As a result of the impending depletion of the world’s store of fossil fuel and the much talked about energy crisis, renewable energy sources have taken on increased significance of late and is seen as the solution to the problems.
Three types of energy sources have been in the fore front, solar energy solutions, wind energy generation and hydroelectric power.
Solar electric power: The sun’s energy is perhaps the most abundant and original energy source available on earth and it is indeed a shame that more effort is not being made to tap into this never ending resource. This is essentially free energy. To tap this abundant source of energy requires some basic pieces of equipment, rechargeable batteries, an inverter, charge controller and solar panels (an in depth expose will be done later) these basic items are sufficient to provide the type of power necessary to energise your home appliances.
This not only cuts down on your energy bill but depending on the configuration, can eliminate your need for grid power entirely.
Solar energy systems have many advantages apart from being cost effective in the medium term, they are low maintenance hence your need to pay a monthly energy bill would either be reduced or eliminated completely.
Hydro-electric power: this is perhaps the most widely used alternative energy source in use today. It is used primarily for the wide scale generation of electricity in some parts.Dams are built to tap the power of running water, but it is however not very convenient to be used on a small scale due to the inherent costs. Studies have revealed also that there is a negative impact on the flora and fauna living in these water bodies.
Wind generated energy: windmills, wind turbines or wind generators have been with us for hundreds of years and are able to generate many megawatts of electricity using the same principle as that used in a power station in that a gas (whether steam or air) is used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and they are especially suited to windy flat surfaces and are also low maintenance setups that will last many years.
In short the greatest advantages of these renewable sources of energy is that they can never be depleted and their use will ultimately result in a greener earth with significantly lower pollution.
